This is a call out to unsung heroes with big hearts who have stepped in to support roles but have little training on responding to complex mental health issues.

We want you to be a Mental Health First Aider too!

What you need to know

The MHFA scholarship application process is designed for us to get to know you and the contributions/support you offer within the realm of mental health in Aotearoa. If your application is successful we will connect you with a fully or partially sponsored space on one of our MHFA courses in Wellington.

Am I eligible to apply?

We welcome applications from those who are out there in Aotearoa using their time to support the mental health of others. That contribution could present itself in a range of different ways but it’s likely that empathy will be at the core of how you operate. Our scholarship recipients may be community leaders or carers, charity volunteers, or people who use their time to support others struggling with their mental health. These are the unsung heroes who have stepped into support roles, with big hearts but little training on responding to complex mental health issues. Financial hardship and other relevant barriers against attending will also be considered in the selection process.

Scholarships will be awarded based on identifying individuals who;
  • Demonstrate examples of the support/contribution they have offered in the past.
  • Paint a clear vision of the support/contribution they intend to offer in the future.
  • Are willing to offer valuable insight gained from their own experiences to enrich the course they attend.
  • Align with CoLiberates mission to generate culture change towards a more positive relationship with mental health, and our company values of being bold, empathetic, open and collaborative.
Is there an application deadline?
  • Our MHFA courses run monthly, which means applications are always open. If there are specific dates you are interested in attending you will need to apply at least one month in advance. Please note, we can not guarantee you will be offered your first choice of dates.

When can I expect to hear back from you about the application?
  • We will endeavour to notify scholarship recipients of their success a minimum of 3 weeks before the course dates. We may be able to provide flexibility around dates on a case by case basis.
Does the scholarship include travel costs?
  • You will be responsible for your own travel costs and accommodation, courses are based in Wellington. You will receive information about course locations and logistics when you have accepted your place on the course.

Is this certificate an NZQA recognised qualification?

  • No. This is a two-day certificate that can be likened to a physical first aid course. You will learn how to recognise and respond to developing mental illness and mental health crisis, but you will not leave a mental health professional. The internationally recognised course was developed in Australia in 2000 by incorporating the expertise of hundreds of researchers, clinicians, mental health consumer advocates and carer advocates. You can learn more about the course and it’s success stories at

The MHFA course was so helpful in enabling me to confidently approach and have conversations with people in my life who I think are struggling. Before the MHFA course I wouldn't have had this confidence and would've thought that I'd just be making things worse. Thank you for the knowledge and skills!

Excellent in every way, best course I have completed

Ray Tuffin, WCC

I believe the awareness this MHFA course builds is essential to our humanity at this time. The care, sensitivity and experiential tools that Coliberate offers with this education is exceptional.

I really enjoyed the session and the facilitator made it a really comfortable for a slight introvert like myself to participate. Mental health is an important thing for us to be talking about and checking in regularly with our people too. This course has helped me to feel more comfortable and aware to be able to support my team.
